The
Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi has said that he will wade
into the the current crisis between the management of Obafemi Awolowo
University (OAU) Ile-Ife and the Students’ Union of the institution with
a view to resolving it.
The institution has been shut down as a result of the crisis.
The
Ooni of Ife who is the Chairman of the Council of Obas in Osun State
said this during his visit to OAU campus to watch a friendly football
match between the Shooting Star FC and the Ajiroba FC, organised his and
played on the OAU campus football pitch.
The
management of OAU, through a statement signed by the Public Relations
Officer of the institution, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, had shut down the
university indefinitely and also suspended the activities of the
Students’ Union as a result of a protest by the students over
allegations of poor living condition in their hostels.
The
students’ Union leaders presented a letter to the Ooni when he visited
the school for the football match listing their demands.
Addressing
a press conference on the 41st convocation of the university, the OAU
Vice Chancellor, Professor Bamitale Omole declined comment on the crisis
as he refused to answer questions relating to the shutdown of the
university, insisting that he would only talk on the convocation.
But
at another press conference inside the Students’ Union Building on the
campus, the President of the Students’ Union, Mr Omotayo Akande told
journalists that the living condition in the hostels on OAU campus had
become bad and unbearable for the students.
